Apr. 24—WATERBURY — Four people were killed early Thursday after a car crashed into a business at the corner of Cherry Street and Maple Avenue, police said.

The four people killed were all occupants of the car involved in the crash, a Waterbury police spokesperson, Lt. Ryan Bessette, said in a statement. He said there were no people inside the portion of the building that was struck by the car at the time of the crash.

Police were called to the scene at 45 Cherry St. at 12:47 a.m. for a "single-vehicle motor vehicle accident," Bessette said.

Three of the occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene, Bessette said. The fourth person was taken to a local hospital, where they later died from their injuries, he said.

There were no other occupants inside the car, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation, Bessette said.

A section of Cherry Street will remain closed from East Main Street to Walnut Street "until further notice," due to the crash investigation, he added.

Photos from the scene showed the wreckage of a car flipped upside down and a heavily damaged building with debris strewn about over the sidewalk. Multiple firefighters, police and medics swarmed around the scene. The immediate area around the street corner was blocked by emergency vehicles, including a fire truck and police cars.

Property records showed the building struck by the car was a mixed-use property with a retail store, Hernandez Market, located at the corner of Maple Avenue where the crash occurred. The building was constructed in 1900, and last sold in October 2023 for $400,000, the property records said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
